PERMUTATIONS is a collaboration with mutli-instrumentalist Gergely Nagy, who helped shaped the album's distinct soundscape by blending experimental, electronic, and traditional folk textures. Nagy’s electronic background infuses traditional folk with atmospheric elements, such as using "Theremin-like" synths to shadow Lovell's vocals. The pair share an interest in using live instruments with effects pedals to create atmospheric sounds. Their combined influences span traditional folk, to Hendrix, Kate Bush and Bjork. The tracks include two original songs written by Lovell, The Selkie and The Death of an Ordinary Star, reworkings of the traditional folk ballads True Thomas, Black Jack Davy, The Dreadful Ghost, and The Elfin Knight, and a version of Dougie MacLean’s Ready for the Storm. The album explores themes of disruption, transformation, change and the different sides of ourselves, and features characters of a shapeshifting nature. It is produced by Marion Fleetwood, arranged by Clementine Lovell and Gergely Nagy, and features Clementine on vocals, piano, accordion, and accordion created effects, Gergely on guitar, bass, synth and percussion, and Marion on strings.
